click here for a print-friendly version of this page The Lewis-Clark Valley is located 465 river miles from the Pacific Ocean at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers. The twin cities of Lewiston, Idaho and Clarkston, Washington, named in honor of the Corps of Discovery explorers, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, serve as a regional service center for the Inland Northwest. Lewiston is the site of Idaho’s first capital, which was later moved to Boise. Lewiston is also the site of Idaho’s only seaport, one of three port facilities serving the Lewis-Clark Valley.

The history of the Lewis-Clark Valley is rich with traditions and stories of the Nez Perce Indians and how they welcomed the explorers in 1805. More stories followed when the valley became the home to miners, merchants, railroads, mill workers and farmers.

Recreational opportunities abound in the Lewis-Clark Valley. Known as the Gateway to Hells Canyon, North America’s deepest gorge, opportunities for jet boating, whitewater rafting, swimming, fishing, hunting, hiking and camping are limitless. Miles of levee pathways follow the rivers for walking, jogging and biking. The area is often referred to as the "Banana Belt" due to the mild winter climate that allows for year-round golfing while being only a short drive away from snow skiing and snowmobiling. The Lewis-Clark Valley is a recreational paradise teeming with history…come experience it.

7/4/2008 - 8/2/2008 -  Lincoln & Idaho Exhibit
Lewiston
The Center for Arts & History (CAH) at Lewis-Clark State College will explore the life of our sixteenth President and many facets of his relationship to Idaho with presentation of Lincoln & Idaho, an Idaho Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission traveling exhibition. Lincoln & Idaho will be on view in the CAH Main Gallery July 4 through August 2, 2008. The public is invited to celebrate the opening of Lincoln & Idaho with an 1860’s-style Independence Day Celebration on Friday, July 4 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Main Gallery of the LCSC CAH; the event is free and open to the public. In lieu of traditional political speeches that were part of 1860’s celebrations, a presentation by David Leroy has been arranged. Leroy’s talk, Rocky Mountain Legacy, explores the unique relationship between Lincoln and the Idaho Territory, which he created in 1863. Mr. Leroy appears in cooperation with the Idaho Humanities Council (IHC). Lincoln & Idaho features 44 image/text panels and 6 cases of Lincoln memorabilia and original artifacts such as ballots from the 1860 presidential election, mourning ribbons and a print of the Gettysburg Address signed by Edward Everett. Artifacts and memorabilia are on loan from the National Archives, the Idaho Historical Society, Leroy's collection and other private collections. Additional programming for Lincoln & Idaho was made possible by the Idaho Humanities Council and the Idaho Community Foundation and includes first-person living history presentations by Lincoln impersonator Skip Critell, a period musical performance, and a presentation by Garry Bush from the Speakers’ Bureau at LCSC. The Center for Arts & History, a department of Community Programs at LCSC, provides educational opportunities in arts and history for students of all ages and serves as a regional resource for arts and culture. Located at 415 Main Street in downtown Lewiston, the Center is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and can be contacted at (208) 792-2243 or by visiting www.lcsc.edu/museum.
